Imagine a new, low-cost system deployed in individual homes and communities that produces renewable green energy, with the ability to store and manage it locally. This system, under development by the EU-funded FreeHydroCells project, is a disruptive solar-to-hydrogen energy harvesting storage solution. It aims to introduce sustainable new materials that harness the power of the sun and drive photoelectrochemical reactions that split water into a harmless oxygen gas byproduct and hydrogen fuel.
The FreeHydroCells system (if fully successful) will produce low-cost green hydrogen gas energy without producing harmful byproduct gases and without relying on the existing grid supply. This has the potential to bring energy savings, energy security and energy resilience to local communities while countering the causes of climate change.
