Sunlight, water and a new, cleaner way to make green hydrogen
28 October, 2026
FreeHydroCells is advancing a leaf-inspired approach to green hydrogen, using sunlight and water to explore a cleaner, more direct route to renewable hydrogen production.
As FreeHydroCells moves closer to its conclusion, the project is focused on completing proof-of-concept verification and assessing its broader impact. While the final chapter has yet to be written, important milestones remain ahead. Stay tuned for future updates as we reflect on achievements and explore the project's legacy and future potential.
New Breakthrough in Hydrogen Research from FreeHydroCells
26 June, 2026
The FreeHydroCells project celebrates a major milestone as its latest research is featured on the cover of ACS Electrochemistry. The study explores a hidden challenge in green hydrogen production—how tiny bubbles can limit efficiency—and reveals how advanced 3D-printed electrode designs can better control bubble behaviour. This breakthrough offers new insights into making hydrogen production more efficient, bringing clean energy solutions one step closer to reality.
FreeHydroCells 2025 General Assembly Meeting held in Cork, Ireland
1 October, 2025
The FreeHydroCells consortium came together in sunny Cork for its September 2025 General Assembly, hosted by University College Cork and UCC Academy. Over two days, partners from across Europe shared progress, explored technical challenges, and strengthened collaboration on the project’s mission: transforming solar energy into green hydrogen at scale.
FreeHydroCells Labs Recognised for Sustainable Practices – Joins Ireland’s Green Lab Leaders
31 July, 2025
FreeHydroCells has been recognised as a Green Lab Leader under Ireland’s Sustainable Laboratory Certification Programme. This marks a major milestone in our commitment to sustainable research practices — both in the way we work and in the clean energy technology we are pioneering. Learn more about our efforts to reduce waste, optimise energy use, and develop next-gen solar-to-hydrogen systems.
Empowering the future: Insights from the FreeHydroCells Civic Engagement Workshop
14 February, 2025
The FreeHydroCells Civic Engagement Workshop brought together experts from academia, industry, and policy to discuss the future of green hydrogen and its transformative potential. The project’s novel submerged photon-driven electrolyser system aims to make hydrogen production more efficient, sustainable, and affordable. Key discussions focused on overcoming adoption barriers, integrating local energy solutions, and aligning with EU policies to drive the transition toward a decentralised, green energy future.
FreeHydroCells participated in H2IRL (Hydrogen Ireland Conference) 2024, a forum to further the commercialisation of hydrogen in Ireland and internationally.
A Visit to Ireland’s First Science Studio: Kane Science Studio at UCC
31 October, 2024
Read about the unique Kane Science Studio at UCC, a one-of-a-kind space designed to inspire and engage everyone from primary school students to postgraduate researchers and industry professionals alike.
As part of the working groups under the DAAD ERA Fellowship – Green Hydrogen program, the DAAD fellows organised two sessions to present their ongoing research, projects, and areas of investigation. FreeHydroCells project scientist, Dr. Ievgen Nedrygailov (University College Cork), participated in this programme.
